What Is a Studienkolleg – and Why Is It Important for Your Studies in Germany?
You want to study in Germany, but your school-leaving certificate is not directly recognized? Then a Studienkolleg is often a necessary intermediate step. It is your stepping stone to studying in Germany – especially for international applicants from countries such as India, Vietnam, China, Brazil, Egypt, or Turkey.
This guide explains what a Studienkolleg is, who needs it, how to apply, and how to best prepare.
What Is a Studienkolleg?
A Studienkolleg is a special educational institution in Germany for international prospective students. It targets applicants whose school-leaving certificate from their home country is not directly recognized as a university entrance qualification (HZB) in Germany.
The Studienkolleg offers one- to two-semester preparatory courses that prepare you academically and linguistically for your studies. You can choose from different subject tracks, depending on your intended field of study:
- T-course: Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Technology
- M-course: Medicine, Biology, Pharmacy
- W-course: Economics, Social Sciences
- G-course: Humanities
- S-course: Language and Literature
Most Studienkollegs are public institutions, meaning they are tuition-free (except for semester fees). However, there are also some private Studienkollegs that charge fees.
At the end, you take the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) – a state-recognized exam that qualifies you for admission to German universities.
Who Needs a Studienkolleg?
Not all international applicants are required to attend a Studienkolleg. Whether your certificate is sufficient depends on your country of origin and its education system.
👉 You can check whether your school-leaving certificate is recognized at anabin.kmk.org.
Typical cases where a Studienkolleg is required:
- You have completed only 11 or 12 years of school
- Your certificate does not correspond to the German Abitur
- You do not have university experience in your home country
If you have already studied one or two years at a recognized university, you may be eligible for direct admission.
Application Requirements
To apply for a Studienkolleg, you must meet the following requirements:
- ✅ Foreign university entrance qualification (HZB) – e.g., a recognized school certificate
- ✅ German language skills at B1/B2 level (depending on the Studienkolleg)
- ✅ Pass the entrance exam – usually in German and Mathematics
- ✅ Proof of financial resources – e.g., blocked account or declaration of commitment
- 🔁 For some countries: APS certificate (e.g., China, India, Vietnam)
The Application Process: Step by Step
- Check if you need a Studienkolleg (e.g., on anabin.kmk.org)
- Learn German – at least B1/B2 (e.g., with TestDaF, telc, Goethe)
- Choose your application path:
- Via uni-assist.de – central application platform
- Via the university directly – if they have their own admission process
- Or directly at the Studienkolleg of your choice
- Prepare the required documents:
- School certificates (certified and translated)
- Language certificates
- Copy of passport
- If applicable: APS certificate, letter of motivation, CV
- Take the entrance exam – usually written in German and Math
- Wait for admission and apply for a visa
📌 Tip: Places are limited – apply early and completely!
The Feststellungsprüfung (FSP)
At the end of the Studienkolleg, you will take the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP). It consists of written and sometimes oral exams in several subjects – depending on the course (T, M, W, G, or S).
If you pass, you receive a subject-specific university entrance qualification, allowing you to apply to universities and universities of applied sciences throughout Germany – for study programs that match your course track.
